What to Wear for your Photo Session
Choosing outfits for photos doesn’t need to feel overwhelming. This guide is designed to help you dress with intention, photograph beautifully, and show up feeling confident and completely yourself.
The ‘Please AVOID’ List
• Sporty ball caps (structured or dressy hats are always welcome)
• Logos, slogans, or heavy branding
• Large or loud patterns like plaid, bold stripes, or oversized florals
• Neon or very bright shades that pull focus
• Very short skirts or dresses that limit movement
1. START WITH YOU (THE WOMAN)
It’s easy to style everyone else first — but your outfit sets the tone. Choose something that makes
you feel confident, comfortable, and like your best self. When you feel good, it shows in every frame. Flowy dresses, soft skirts, tailored denim, and textured tops all photograph effortlessly. If you can move, laugh, and breathe in it, you’ve made the right choice.
For the Men
Neutral, solid colors photograph cleanly and stand the test of time. Ivory, beige, taupe, gray, and
black are always safe choices. A chambray or denim button-up paired with khaki, sage, or black pants works beautifully in almost any setting.
2. Curate a Color Palette
Think of your outfits as a collection rather than individual statements. Earthy tones, muted pastels, and warm neutrals create an elevated, editorial feel. Aim for three to four colors total, anchored by one or two neutrals for balance.
3. Coordinate, Don't Match
Perfectly matching outfits is not the goal. Instead, coordinate colors, textures, and layers to create a cohesive look that still feels natural and relaxed.
4. Choose solids over prints
Solid colors and subtle textures keep attention on connection and emotion. Avoid logos, wording, bold/clashing prints, and neon tones — they distract from the story we want to capture.
5. Dress with location in mind
Your setting dictates your outfit choices. Woodsy sessions pair great with flowy, whimsical dresses. Urban sessions lean slightly more polished and elevated. Winter sessions shine with boots and tailored coats. When in doubt, let busy locations pair with soft and simple outfits, and simple locations allow for bolder choices.
6. THINK ABOUT WHERE YOUR PHOTOS WILL LIVE
If you already know where your images will be displayed, consider the colors in that space. Outfits that complement your home décor help your photos feel intentional once they’re framed and hung.
7. ELevate the everyday
These photos are keepsakes you’ll revisit for years. Dressing a little more elevated than usual adds polish and helps you feel your best during the session.
WINTER STYLING NOTES
• Keep kids warm — happy kids make better photos. Choose wool coats layered over sweaters
instead of bulky snow gear
• Use layers intentionally: sweaters, scarves, vests, and jackets add texture and interest
• Hide warmth underneath with thermal layers, extra socks, leggings, and hand warmers
• Lean into seasonal accessories like knit hats, mittens, scarves, and boots for a cozy winter aesthetic
